The Rangers drafted Steve Buechele in the fifth round of the 1982 draft. He played seven seasons for the Rangers, hitting .240 with 94 home runs and 338 RBIs.
He became the manager of the Rangers' Double-A affiliate, the Frisco Roughriders, this year.
"He's obviously the son of Steve, our Double-A manager there," said director of amateur scouting Kip Fagg. "We're excited to get him. He's had big years at Oklahoma for a couple of years. He's a hitter. We like the player."
Garrett Buechele is the leading hitter for the University of Oklahoma Sooners this season, batting .387 with 16 home runs and 62 RBIs in 59 games. As a freshman, he was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after hitting .353 with four home runs and 40 RBIs.
The younger Buechele, an Arlington native, declined an interview in order to concentrate on Oklahoma's NCAA Tournament run. The Sooners travel to Charlottesville, Va., to play Virginia in the Super Regionals.
