Byrd returns, boosts Rangers to victory

at Surprise, Ariz.
Friday, March 16

Rangers at the plate: Marlon Byrd was back in action Friday after getting hit in the hand in Tucson on Thursday, and he put the Rangers ahead with a two-run single in the sixth. Sammy Sosa had a first-inning single and has now hit safely in 11 straight Spring Training games.

Padres at the plate: Josh Bard hit his second home run of the spring with nobody on base in the fourth inning. Mike Cameron doubled and scored in the fourth and is 3-for-7 with two doubles in his last two games. Adrian Gonzalez was 2-for-4 and now has seven hits in his last 19 at-bats.

Rangers on the mound: Joaquin Benoit continues to pitch well for the Rangers. He pitched a scoreless sixth and has not allowed a run in five innings this spring. He has allowed two hits, walked none and struck out five. Starter Jamey Wright allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.

Padres on the mound: Starting pitcher Clay Hensley, after missing his last start because of the flu, faced 14 batters and allowed seven to reach base on three hits, three walks and one hit batter. But he held the Rangers scoreless by battling out of two bases-loaded jams.

Cactus League records: Rangers, 9-6; Padres, 5-9-1.

Up next: The Rangers are at Peoria on Saturday to play the Seattle Mariners. Kevin Millwood and Kameron Loe are expected to pitch for the Rangers. The Padres travel to Mesa to play the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Tim Stauffer pitches for them.
