Washington goes home due to death in family

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers manager Ron Washington has left the team and returned home to New Orleans due to a death in his family.

Washington flew home on Thursday and is expected to rejoin the team this weekend in Las Vegas. The Rangers have a two-game series with the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday as well as split-squad games in Arizona.

Bench coach Jackie Moore will manage the Rangers during Washington's absence. Moore is in his fourth season as Washington's bench coach and was the Athletics manager in 1984-86. He had a record of 163-190.

The Rangers were to play the Athletics on Thursday in Surprise and Josh Hamilton was in the lineup playing center field. He left Thursday's game with a jammed right heel.
