ARLINGTON -- Left-hander Kevin Matthews, the Rangers' first-round pick in last year's First-Year Player Draft, was promoted to the Class A Hickory Crawdads on Thursday. In seven appearances, including three starts, with the Arizona League Rangers, Matthews went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
Matthews -- ranked by MLB.com as Texas' No. 11 prospect entering the season -- was 0-3 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts with the Short-Season Spokane Indians. Before his promotion, the lefty struck out 30 batters, walked 18 and held hitters to a .222 batting average across two levels this season.
Matthews was the 33rd pick of the 2011 Draft, a compensatory selection received when the Phillies signed Type A free agent and former Rangers lefty Cliff Lee before last season. Matthews was selected with the final pick of the first round out of Richmond Hill (Ga.) High School.
