ARLINGTON -- Another potential free agent came off the board this weekend when the D-backs signed catcher Miguel Montero to a five year, $60 million contract.
With Yadier Molina signing a five-year contract for $75 million this spring, that's two potential free-agent catchers off the market. Right now, the top catchers who will be eligible for free agency are Mike Napoli, Russell Martin, A.J. Pierzynski and Yorvit Torrealba. The Braves have an option on Brian McCann and the Phillies have one on Carlos Ruiz that are both expected to be exercised.
"Right now, I view it as I'm playing every day," Napoli said. "I'm not worried about it. If the Rangers and my agent want to talk that's fine, but there is nothing going on right now."
The question is how many teams will be actively looking for catching in the offseason and if they'll be willing to spend a significant amount of money in the free-agent market.
"There are not going to be too many free-agent catchers, but the bottom line is I want to stay here," Napoli said. "If things don't work out, I'll test the market. But I want to stay here and be a part of this organization. It's a great place to play."
