Special guest throws out first pitch

ARLINGTON -- Chris Newcomer threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers game against the Red Sox on Friday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Newcomer, a Fort Worth-area resident and local softball player, is recovering from brain cancer and was representing the Rangers as part of their efforts in Major League Baseball's part in the Stand Up To Cancer campaign.

The campaign was launched on May 28 and Major League Baseball was the first major donor with a $10 million campaign.

Also before Friday's game, the Rangers honored Ian Kinsler as their nominee for the Heart and Hustle Award that is presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Nominees are taken from every team and voted on my members of the Players Association.

"Just the name of the award is why I would want to be picked," Kinsler said. "I want to be known as a guy who plays hard and plays with heart. They could have chosen [anyone] so I'm glad they chose me."

In other Rangers' award news, Tom Grieve was named the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Honoree by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. He will be honored at the Foundation's dinner on Nov. 18 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

"It's a unique honor to receive an award as prestigious as this lifetime achievement award," Grieve said. "Particularly because it is associated with Bobby Bragan, who has meant a lot to me in my career and someone for whom I have a great deal of respect."
