The move would free up a spot for the Rangers on their 40-man roster. Right now, the roster is full. Two possible candidates are pitchers Willie Eyre and Doug Mathis, who are both coming off arm injuries.
The Rangers have four players eligible for arbitration: pitchers Brandon McCarthy, C.J. Wilson and Frank Francisco, and outfielder Marlon Byrd. Arbitration-eligible players are the ones usually targeted for non-tender, but the Rangers don't plan to do that to any of those four players.
