Rangers seek utility infielder

|

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- General manager Jon Daniels said the Rangers are still looking outside the organization for a possible utility infielder who can play shortstop. The best name on the market is Ryan Theriot, but top candidates may be reluctant to sign with the club because playing time is limited behind its incumbent All-Stars.

"We've been really fortunate to have great infields over the past decade," Daniels said. "That's always been an issue and something we've heard about from free agents. That's why promoting guys from within gets around that, and trading for guys gets around that."

The Rangers will look at baseball's No. 1 prospect, shortstop Jurickson Profar, as a potential utility infielder, but the better internal candidate may be Leury Garcia. He is a switch-hitter with great speed who has shown the Rangers that he can play both the infield and the outfield.

"He has the legitimate skill set for that role," Daniels said.

Profar, who has not yet arrived in camp, has still not informed the Rangers if he intends to play for The Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.
