Coolbaugh promoted to Minors hitting instructor

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have promoted Scott Coolbaugh to Minor League hitting instructor. Coolbaugh spent last season as the hitting coach at Triple-A Round Rock. He was the Rangers' hitting instructor in 2010-12 before being replaced by Dave Magadan last season.

He will be assisted by Brook Jacoby, who returns to the Rangers after seven years as the Reds' hitting coach. Jacoby was a Minor League hitting instructor for the Rangers in 2003-06 and also filled in for Rudy Jaramillo at the Major League level at the beginning of the 2006 season.

The Rangers also hired James Keller as a special assistant to the general manager and Brian Williams as their Southeast Regional crosschecker. Keller has a strong pitching background as a scout with the Orioles and D-backs, while Williams spent the past 10 years as a scout with the Mariners.

Former longtime amateur scouts Mike Grouse and Jay Eddings have been promoted to pro scouting department and Jake Krug has been promoted to a special assignment crosschecker on the amateur side. Krug has 11 seasons of experience with the Rangers in scouting and player development.

Bobby Crook, who had been the Rangers' manager of amateur scouting, has been promoted to amateur scout in the vital North Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas area. Matt Klotsche has been promoted to manager of amateur scouting going into his seventh season with the Rangers. He had been manager of baseball operations. Mike Medici has been hired away from the Blue Jays as an amateur scout in the Midwest.

Pro scout Mickey White and amateur scouts Phil Geisler, Derek Lee and Steve Watson are not returning to the organization in 2014.
