ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have placed pitcher Vicente Padilla on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.
The Rangers designated Padilla for assignment on Aug. 7 while they were in Anaheim. He went unclaimed on trade waivers and the Rangers were unable to work out a trade with another team.
Padilla, who was 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA in 18 starts, is free to sign with any other team. He has been working out and continuing his throwing in Arlington over the past 10 days. Any team can sign him for the pro-rated minimum while the Rangers are responsible for the remaining $1.75 million on his contract.
