Byrd out of lineup with kidney stone

NEW YORK -- Outfielder Marlon Byrd was out of the lineup on Wednesday while dealing with a painful kidney stone.

Byrd was taken to a local Manhattan hospital early Wednesday and underwent a procedure to break up the stones. There was a possibility that he would be available as a pinch-hitter but the Rangers weren't going to push him into the starting lineup.

"Not after going through all that," Washington said. "No way. I've been there and done that. It's painful."

Byrd's kidney stone was the latest development on a team that is dealing with several health issues.

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, on the disabled list with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in his right shoulder, threw for a second straight day on Wednesday without any the pain or numbness in his arm that was bothering him.

"It felt really good," Saltalamacchia said. "I couldn't ask for anything better."

Saltalamacchia will be with the Rangers through Thursday and then is scheduled to go play three games on medical rehabilitation assignment in the Minor Leagues. If all goes well, he could be activated as early as Tuesday. That's when the rosters are expanded to as many as 40 players.

Esteban German, who is on the disabled list with a strained right groin, is headed for Triple-A Oklahoma City on medical rehabilitation assignment on Thursday. He should be activated at some point next week.

The Rangers have no idea when left-handed reliever Eddie Guardado will be ready to pitch again. He is on the disabled list with left knee inflammation. The Rangers would like another left-handed reliever in September when the rosters are expanded. Two candidates at Triple-A are A.J. Murray and Mike Hinckley, although neither on the 40-man roster.

Washington said Andruw Jones is not done for the season. Jones is on the disabled list with a torn left hamstring.
