The Rangers announced Thursday that they will honor longtime great Michael Young on May 17 prior to the club's game against Toronto. Young began his career in the Blue Jays' farm system before being traded to Texas, where he played from 2000 through '12.

Young, who retired on January 31, was named the Rangers' Player of the Year on five occasions and named to the American League All-Star Team seven times. Young hit .300 or better in seven seasons, and he won the batting title in 2005 and a Gold Glove Award at shortstop in '08.

Young retired as the franchise leader in games (1,823), hits (2,230), runs (1,085), doubles (415), triples (55), total bases (3,286), at-bats (7,399) and multihit games (651), and he ranks third in RBIs (984) and extra-base hits (647).

He'll be feted in a pregame ceremony that will highlight his achievements. The Rangers expect to make several presentations and to have remarks by key individuals, including former All-Star Vernon Wells, who has been Young's friend since their days in Toronto's Minor League system. The on-field ceremony for Young is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m. CT, with first pitch at 7:15.
