Gallo may need bigger challenge

ARLINGTON -- Class A third baseman Joey Gallo, who was one of eight Myrtle Beach Pelicans who was selected to the Carolina League All-Star Game, may not be long for that league. Opposing teams are increasingly reluctant to pitch to him.

Gallo is hitting .320 with 21 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .753 slugging percentage in 55 games. He leads all of the Minor Leagues in home runs and slugging percentage, but also with 50 walks. He has been walked 14 times alone in his last nine games, including three times in three separate games.

The Carolina League All-Star Game is June 17. The Rangers may start considering promotions after that date and Gallo could be a prime candidate to end up at Double-A Frisco. The other Pelicans named to the All-Star Game are pitchers Alex Gonzalez, Alexander Claudio and Andrew Faulkner, catcher Jorge Alfaro, infielder Preston Beck and outfielders Royce Bolinger and Nick Williams.
