Rangers' top pick Ortiz sharp in Class A debut

Right-hander Luis Ortiz, the Rangers' first-round pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, threw three hitless innings Wednesday in his debut with Class A Hickory.

Right-hander Tyler Smith relieved Ortiz to start the fourth inning and carried the no-hit bid into the ninth. Kannapolis second baseman Christian Stringer broke it up with a leadoff single and the Intimidators scratched out a late run, but the Crawdads held on for a 2-1 victory.

Ortiz, the Rangers' No. 11 prospect, struck out two and walked one. Smith struck out six batters and gave up one run on two hits and a walk in six innings.

The Rangers selected Ortiz 30th overall in June. The 18-year-old made his professional debut in the Arizona League on July 6, almost exactly a month after he was drafted. He began his career with a 13-inning scoreless streak before giving up three runs in his last start.

Ortiz made six appearances in the Arizona League before he was promoted. He struck out 15 batters and held opponents to 12 hits and three walks in 13 1/3 innings.
