Arlington, TX - The Texas Rangers today announced that catcher Chris Gimenez has been removed from the MLB Paternity Leave List and has been designated for assignment.
Gimenez was placed on the Paternity Leave List on Monday and was removed from the active roster at that time. A player can remain on that list for up to 72 hours. Gimenez is batting .262 with 11 RBI in 34 games over two stints for the Rangers this season.
Texas has 10 days to trade, release, or outright Gimenez to the minor leagues. With today's move, the Rangers have 39 players on their major league roster.
RANGERS ANNOUNCE MINOR LEAGUE AWARD WINNERS FOR JULY
The Rangers have also announced the club's July monthly award winners: RF Nomar Mazara (July Player of the Month), LHP Andrew Faulkner (Pitcher), RHP Phil Klein (Reliever), and SS Hanser Alberto (Defender).
The 19-year-old Mazara was promoted from Low-A Hickory to Double-A Frisco on Monday after batting .287 (27-94) with 9 home runs, 4 doubles, 20 RBI, and 25 runs scored in 25 games for the Pelicans in July. He led the South Atlantic League in home runs and walks (18) last month, and ranked among July league leaders in runs (T3rd) and RBI (T6th).
Faulkner, 21, was promoted from High-A Myrtle Beach to Frisco on July 26. For the month, he was 5-0 with a 1.41 ERA (5 ER/32.0 IP) in 6 games/starts, posting 31 strikeouts against 6 walks with a .202 opponents average. Dating to his last June start, Faulkner is 7-0 with a 1.20 ERA (6 ER/45.0 IP) in his last 8 starts.
Klein pitched 17.1 scoreless innings over 8 relief appearances with Triple-A Round Rock last month with 6 walks against 26 strikeouts before his promotion to the Rangers on August 1. Before his call-up to the big leagues, Klein had a 35.0-inning scoreless streak in the minors dating to May 13.
Alberto has just one error since joining Frisco on July 5, the lone error in his last 38 games in the field dating to June 23. He owns a .264 average in 98 games for Myrtle Beach and Frisco this season.
