BACK IN THE SHOW: Callix Crabbe (pronounced KAY-licks crab) will be in his first season as the club's assistant hitting coach, his first professional coaching position after spending six years as a baseball instructor and coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida…was formally hired on December 4, 2018…the former switch-hitter saw a 10-year professional playing career end in 2011, a span which included 21 major league games with the Padres in 2008.
COACHING HISTORY: Spent four years from 2012-15 as head varsity baseball coach and instructor at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida…also had his own consulting company that he founded in the Tampa Bay area in 2015, Crabbeology Sports Development, providing instruction in hitting, defense, base running, bunting, game strategy, personal development, and physical conditioning.
PLAYING CAREER: Moved into coaching after a 10-season pro playing career in the Milwaukee, San Diego, Seattle, and Toronto organizations…in his minors career, had nearly as many walks (518) as strikeouts (530), while compiling a .358 OBP over 10 seasons…while with Triple-A Tacoma in Seattle system in 2009, played 2nd base for bulk of the year while serving as double play partner for shortstop Chris Woodward in the early part of the campaign.
Signed with the Brewers after being selected in the 12th round of the 2002 June draft, and ranked among Pioneer League leaders in steals (2nd, 22) and batting (6th, .328) that summer with Ogden…in his first full season with Beloit (A) in 2003, played 2nd base alongside regular 1st baseman and Midwest League MVP Prince Fielder…outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. was also on that squad…was named best defensive 2nd baseman in California League while with High Desert (High-A) in 2004, year in which he was selected a league All-Star by Baseball America while ranking among circuit leaders in triples (2nd, 11), hits (5th, 157), and steals (5th, 34)…honored with community award for his outreach while with Nashville in 2007…was left unprotected following that season and was selected by San Diego in the 2007 Rule 5 Draft.
Made Padres Opening Day roster in 2008 and batted .176 (6-34) over 21 games in his lone MLB action before he was designated for assignment on May 12 and returned to the Brewers organization on May 16…made ML debut as pinch-hitter on April 3 vs. Houston, and 1st hit was an infield single off Brad Hennessey in the 10th inning on April 8 at San Francisco…in one of his 6 starts on May 4 at Florida, had a single and 2 walks…final game was May 8 at Atlanta.
PERSONAL/AMATEUR: Callix Sadeaq Crabbe…resides in Tampa, Fla., with his wife, Amanda, daughter Alana (8) and son Calyx (5)…was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and moved to Georgia at age 15…selected by Atlanta in the 32nd round of the 2000 June draft out of Stone Mountain (GA) High School, but did not sign…was drafted by the Brewers out of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, after spending his freshman season at Young Harris (Ga.) College.
